Setzer writes his wife Carolin Wilson Setzer about his experiences with Co. D. of the 49th North Carolina infantry which saw action in eastern Tennessee and southern Virginia. She writes to him regarding conditions in Catawba Co., and there are several of brother-in-law, J.T. Wilson.

Company H of the 49th North Carolina Infantry Regiment of the Confederate States of America Army was known as the Gaston Rangers. The company was formed in Gaston County, N.C., and, on 21 April 1862, became part of the 49th Regiment. The company was led by Captain Charles Q. Petty from 22 March 1862 to 5 August 1864.
